Magnet pictures a 1-cent US postage stamp from 1932, featuring British naval captain, James Cook (1728-1779).  Cook was an explorer and cartographer, credited with being the first European on the east coast of Australia and Hawaii, and the first to circumnavigate New Zealand.
The15 major islands that make up the Cook Islands in the south Pacific are associated with New Zealand.
James Cook visited the islands in 1773 and in 1777, naming them Hervey Islands.  Fifty years later a naval chart referred to the islands as the Cook Islands and the name stuck.
