Set of four magnets picture Brownies, elf like creatures created by Canadian author and illustrator Palmer Cox (1840-1924). In the 1879-1910 period, Brownies were as popular as today's Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang. Cox created Brownies based on his childhood recollections of Scottish folktales about woodland fairies. Brownies were featured in books, magazines and comic strips, and used in advertising endorsements for a variety of products from sewing thread to marmalade. These magnets picture advertisements for coffee.
