Magnet pictures components from a June, 1957 magazine advertisement for Simmons furniture. The original 6-page ad promoted a $10,000,000 sale of Simmons products to celebrate the company's 87th anniversary. Mattresses, sofas, cots, continental and Hollywood beds were promoted.
Simmons Bedding was founded in 1870 by Zalmon G. Simmons (1828-1910) in Kenosha, Wisconsin. While producing small wooden products, Simmons accepted a patent for wire bedsprings as a debt repayment. He went after the mattress market with fervor and by 1889 was able to reduce his price on coiled spring mattresses by more than 90%. By 1919 the company had nine plants in the U.S. and Canada.
Wikipedia does a good job of describing Simmons history. Hide-A-Bed sofas, using a fold-out-spring mattress, were introduced in 1940 and remained in production until the 1980s.
