Refrigerator magnet pictures the cover of a Christmas catalog from Spear & Co. of Pittsburgh "Let spear be your Santa Claus." The store was founded by Ohio native, Nathaniel Spear (1867-1947) and Max Guggenheim in 1893. Nathaniel's brothers, Alexander and Maurice, soon joined the firm. By 1942 there were 8 Spear stores. Much of the company's success was attributed to the promotion of its time-payment purchase option. Its furniture offerings consisted of moderatly priced reproductions of high end furniture.
Nathaniel died in 1947 and the family chose to close the chain in the 50s.
