Magnet features an 1875 trade advertising card for the Matthew's patented New York Seed Drill distributed by Higganum Manufacturing of Higganum Connecticut. The New York Seed Drill was invented by Elbridge G. Matthews of Massachusets in 1873 and retailed for $10. It was said to be the "simplest, most compact and easiest drill to handle" because it was only 32 inches long.
Higganum was a hot spot for manufacturing in the mid 1800s, home to D & H Scovil Hoe Company and Clark Cutaway Harrow. As the focal point of the agriculture industry moved west in the late 1800s, Higganum's farm equipment manufacturers gradually disappeared but the village did not; today 500 families still call Higganum home.
