Magnet depicts King Edward VI of England (1537-1553), son of King Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour.
Crowned at age 9, Edward reigned ceremonially while a regency council ruled England. He was to have reached majority at age 16, however it became obvious early in 1553 that his illness, most probably tuberculosis (though arsenic poisoning, or syphilis have been suspected), would be fatal.
In his wills, Edward excluded his half sisters Mary and Elizabeth from succession, favoring Protestant Lady Jane Grey and her not-yet-born male heirs. Mary disregarded Edward's wishes and took the throne away from Jane just 9 days after Edward's death.
