The wonderful Wizard of Oz was written by L. Frank Baum (1856-1919) and illustrated by W. W. Denslow (1856-1915). In 1902 it became a popular Broadway musical and in 1939 appeared the classic movie staring Judy Garland.
The first edition was for 10,000 pre-sold copies. Sales were swift and within a few months a second edition was issued, of 15,000 copies. A total output of 250,000 copies was tentiviely predicted by the publisher but it was the Fred Hamlin musical extravaganza production at the Grand Opera House in Chicago that turned it into a story for people of all ages.
By 1938, over a million copies had been printed and by 1956 the number was three million.
