Magnet pictures an advertisement from the mid 1950s promoting Watkins Vanilla Extract.
Minnesotan Joseph Ray Watkins founded his company in 1868 to sell liniments. Vanilla Extract and other cooking products were added to the product line in 1895. Check out the JR. Watkins company website to read an interesting timeline of its history. The company was operated by the Watkins family for its first 110 years, and in 1978 was sold to the Irwin L. Jacobs family, who has been running it ever since. Having watched the sad scene in my own community of venerable old companies destroyed by loot-em-and-dump-em acquirers, the Watkins story is refreshing. Way to go, Watkins!
