In this illustration, the king of Easaidh Ruadh watches his newly won bride transform from an ugly maid to a beautiful woman. He won her in a game with a wicked fairy, Gruagach.
Andrew Lang (1844 - 1912) was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic, Homeric scholar and historian. He is best known for folklore anthologies, particularly for 12 Fairy Tale Books published from 1889 to 1910.
British artists Henry Justice Ford (1860–1941) and Lancelot Speed (1860-1931) became famous as illustrators of Lang’s Fairy books.
