This magnet pictures an illustration by HJ Ford from the late 1800s. It appeared in The Lilac Fairy Tale Book by Andrew Lang accompanying an Irish story, The Wonderful Tune that originally appeared in Fairy Tales and Traditions of the South of Ireland.
In this illustration the green-haired Sea Lady dances with seals, crabs, lobsters, flounders, turbots, cray fish, whiting, haddock, mackerel, herrings, scallops and oysters as she lures a slightly drunken piper, Maurice Conner, into the sea off the coast of Kerry. There they are married and he becomes king of the fish.
Andrew Lang (1844 - 1912) was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic, Homeric scholar and historian. He is best known for folklore anthologies, particularly for 12 Fairy Tale Books published from 1889 to 1910.
British artists Henry Justice Ford (1860–1941) and Lancelot Speed (1860-1931) became famous as illustrators of Lang’s Fairy books.
