This magnet pictures an illustration by Warwick Goble from the early 1900s. It appeared in The Fairy Book by Dinah Maria Craik  accompanying a German tale from the Grimm brothers, The Six Swans.

The illustration pictures Sydnee with her six brothers, who were turned into swans by a wicked stepmother.  To free them Sydnee must make a shirt for each of them and cannot speak for 6 years.  That doesn't prevent her from wedding a King but her witchy mother-in-law steals her first 3 children and blames it on Queen Sydnee.  Just as they're ready to burn her at the stake, the six swans appear, Sydnee gives them their shirts, they turn back into men, the 6-year period of silence ends and the mother-in-law fries instead.

Dinah Craik (1826-1887) was an English poet and novelist, also known by her maiden name as Miss Mulock.

English artist Warwick Goble (1862–1943) illustrated dozens of children's books and magazines, including fairy tale anthologies and such classics as Treasure Island and Kidnapped.
