This magnet pictures an illustration by HJ Ford from the late 1800s. It appeared in The Orange Fairy Tale Book by Andrew Lang accompanying a French story, The White Doe (aka The Doe in the Woods) by Madame d'Aulnoy.
In this illustration the childless queen makes an agreement with a crab fairy that results in the birth of Princess Desirée and sets up a series of adventures.
Andrew Lang (1844 - 1912) was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic, Homeric scholar and historian. He is best known for folklore anthologies, particularly for 12 Fairy Tale Books published from 1889 to 1910.
