Bemelmans wrote seven Madeline books, including one published thirty years after his death.
Bemelman emigrated to America from Germany as a young man after shooting a hotel waiter and offered a choice of reform school or emigration. He became a U.S. citizen in 1918.
He began writing seriously after a career as a newspaper cartoonist failed. His first childrens book was published in 1934 and the first Madeline book in 1939. In 1952 Madeline was produced as an animated cartoon that was nominated for an academy award. His second Madeline book came out the following year with others in 1956, 1959, 1961 and 1985. The final book, Madelin in America and Other Holiday Tales was published in 1999.
