This magnet depicts the devil trying to tempt a saint.
The painting is from the 15th century by an Austrian artist, Michael Pacher (1435-1498). In terms of freaky creatures, the leggy green creature could hold its own with contemporary monsters. It's the face on its butt that does it.
The Devil is showing Saint Wolfgang his Book of Vices. The painting is part of a large group of panels for the high altar display at the Church of St. Wolfgang on the Abersee in Alzkammergut, Austria. Executed around 1480, it is Pacher's best known work, and can still be viewed today at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Germany. The altarpiece was commissioned in 1471 and ten years went into its production. Saint Wolfgang (924-994) is known as The Almoner and Grand Almoner.
