Fridge magnet pictures an illustration from a 1950s advertisement for United Fruit Company's Chiquita Banana. United Fruit was founded in 1899 by the merger of two banana traders, one of which began in 1863. Another merger in 1970, resulted in United Brands, that in 1984 became today's Chiquita Brands International, headquartered in Charlotte, NC. Around the time this illustration appeared, 1955, United processed nearly 3 billion pounds of bananas.
The illustration was probably done by Richard Arthur Allan "Dik" Browne (1917-1989) who created the illustration for Miss Chiquita. Browne was a noted cartoonist, best remembered for his newspaper cartoon series, Hagar the Horrible and Hi and Lois, continued by his sons, Chris Browne and Chance Browne.
