This magnet pictures actress Bessie Love on a 1929 illustrated cover of Photoplay magazine that promised to explain everything a reader might want to know about those new "Talkies."

Bessie is depicted as a show girl wearing a wildly ornamental headdress of beads, sequins and black feathers.  (Possibly a costume from her roles that year in The Hollywood Revue of 1929 or The Broadway Melody?)  She received an Academy nomination for her role in the latter, which was Hollywood's first all-talking musical and the first musical released by  Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Photoplay magazine was founded in 1911 to promote films.  For nearly 80 years it enjoyed a prominent place in the movie industry.

As one of the silent film stars to make the transition to Talkies successfully, Bessie Love (1898-1986) was a fitting representative for the magazine issue's subject theme.  Born as Juanita Horton in Midland, Texas, Love's acting career began when she was 17 and still in high school.  Over the next 68 years she appeared in 131 movies and television programs, including roles in such films as Ragtime, On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Reds, as well as earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
