In 1896 the team that would become today's Chicago Cubs was named the White Stockings and called the Chicago Colts. The president was James Hart, with part owner, Albert Spalding, controlling from behind. Adrian C. Anson was a co-owner and team captain. Two years later he would play his last game with the team. 1896 was the team's 24th season and third season in the second West Side Park where they were scheduled to play ten home games. It had joined the National League 20 years earlier.
